La Canonica is a medieval borgo (village) in the area of Barberino Val d’Elsa, on the summit of a hill, 310 meters above sea level with a commanding view of the farms, vineyards, olive groves, villages and towns of the  surrounding Chianti countryside.

The property consists of a number of cottages and self-catering suites, as well as a "grand villa" and a palazzo that has been converted into splendid B&B rooms.

The B&B rooms are located in the Torre Vecchia another villa in the Borgo which has been utterly transformed from its almost destroyed condition into a beautiful Tuscan house with 7 tasteful, comfortable B&B rooms.  The renovated building has retained the original Tuscan features - the terracotta floors, roof beams and window arrangements, but there is also a decidedly modern and stylish feel to the premises.

Guests of the B&B also have access to a spacious, fireplace equipped lounge will luxurious furnishings, and to a breakfast room where a sumptuous buffet breakfast is served every morning.  Guests can also use the estate's swimming pool and gardens.   An Internet WiFi connection is available in the villa.

Rooms include standard doubles, deluxe doubles and family rooms designed for four people.

My daughter, Arianna, and I spent a lot of time inspecting the cottages and suites of the Canonica La Cortine near San Donato (Barberino Val D'Elsa) in the Chianti.  In a word, it's a magical place, and so it is now one of those rare properties that reach the top of our our recommended list.  The estate is immaculate, the individual cottages, suites and B&B rooms done with just the right touch and prices are realistic.
