About the town of Valva

Valva lies in the High Sele Valley on a calcareous protrusion dominated by the enchanting Villa of the Marquises d’Ayala-Valva and has a wonderful view on the Valley.

Valva was built next to the place where a blooming city of the Roman Empire was before, having the same name. The inhabitants of the roman city, because of the barbaric invasions, left their homes and built a new village up on the mountain – Old Valva- of which it is still possible to see the ruins. Later the village of Valva was rebuilt down on the hill.

The Norman settled there at the beginning of XI century, and built their military and civilian installations at the foot of Marzano Mount. Robert the Guiscard gave the feud of Valva to his army leader Gozzolino. Probably it is from Gozzolino that Family Valva descends. They built all the fortifications of the town.

The Valva Family joined the Order of the Kinghts of Malta in 1600 with Ottavio Valva. The last descendant of the Family was Giuseppe Maria, who conceived and began the construction of the Villa and the Park at the end of 1700. He died without heirs in 1831.

Then all his possessions were conveyed to the d’Ayala Family, of Spanish origin, but already connected to the Valvas because of conjugal ties. The marquise Francesco Saverio d’Ayala finished the construction of the Villa.

After the death of the last descendant, in 1959, the Villa was given to the Order of Malta , to which it still belongs.

During the second World War, the Villa and the Castle became hospital and Headquarter of General Kesserling, and after the American landing in Salerno, they became a contact point of the Anglo-American allied troops.

Both the castle and the big park of 17 hectares, seem to be immersed in a dreaming atmosphere, capable to capture the mind of the visitor. The gracefulness of the architectural shapes, the beauty of the gardens “all’italiana”, the sensual intensity of the sculptures representing nymphs and goddesses, make Villa d’Ayala an absolutely special place.

Paestum is the classical Roman name of a major Graeco-Roman city in the Campania region.

It has always been shrouded in mystery. It was probably founded around 650 BC by a large group of Dorians who had been expelled from the city of Sybaris, a luxurious resort across the mainland on the Ionian Sea. The Dorians named their new colony Poseidonia, after the most important of their gods; it flourished and quickly became the greatest city on the gulf of Salerno. Then in 510 BC, Sybaris was destroyed. Poseidonia languished until 390 BC, when it fell to a tribe of local barbarians called the Lucanians. Legend has it that for decades the Greek inhabitants of the captive city secretly met once a year to remember the illustrious days of their forefathers.

The city of Paestum covers an area of approximately 120 hectares. It's only the 25 hectares that contain the three main temples that have excavated. The other 95 hectares remain on private land and have not been excavated.

The modern town of Paestum, directly to the north of the archaeological site, is a popular seaside resort. In the region of Paestum there are long, sandy beaches.

  • Lunch at ristorante “Nettuno” or “La pergola”

  • Visit ofAgropoli. At the beginning of Cilento coast, dominated by the historical centre, with a feudal castle accessible through a beautiful door, it represents one of the most important and lively place of Cilento. The town (20.000 inhabitants) , where have been recently found some tombs of an age prior to the byzantine period, keeps also the medieval ruins of S. Francesco's monastery, the church of Holy Mary of Costantinople (XVI century), S. Marco's, S. Francesco's, Tresino and Pagliarulo towers, in fairly good conditions. A port with 900 places boat, a traditional and conforting hospitality, the charming beacbeach of Trentova bay contribute to feature Agropoli as important seaside resort.

Day 4 - Certosa di Padula - Teggiano (40 min. from Valva)
breakfastlunchdinner

Morning

  • Visit to Padula

Padula is known for its Charterhouse, an unquestionably artistic and prestigious monument.

The Padula Charterhouse was founded in 1306 by Tommaso Sanseverino. This Padula Charterhouse is so unique and different from any other because of its wide and numerous rooms; just mentioning some numbers gives us an idea of the actual space, the gardens, market yard and monastery cover over 250.000 square meters.

The Charterhouse San Lorenzo of Padula Monastery extends on 52.000 square meters and there are 320 rooms. It is actually Europe's biggest; we can therefore easily deduct that it consists of a complex of many buildings which were added and piled up through the centuries up to the clear baroque marks we can see today. The one-aisle gothic church is exceptionally gorgeous, with cross vaults and groin arches.

The floors are majolicated and go back to the XVIII century; the Chorus of Fathers is extremely prestigious, entirely notched and carved. A glorious wide staircase connects two levels of the big cloister, while the staircase in Padula Charterhouse develops in two elliptical ramps offering visitors a striking scenic effect.

  • Lunch at Ristorante “La sosta del Priore” or “La locanda dei Trecento”

Afternoon

  • Visit to Teggiano

In the afternoon visit of Teggiano. It is an ancient centre of Diano Valley, full of medieval monuments. It is considered a small city-museum, included among the most important centres of the area. In 1485 the Sanseverinos', supporters of angioin party, hatched the famous "Barons' plot", just in the castle of Teggiano, against Ferdinando d'Aragona King of Naples.

Very very beautiful to visit: Church of Annunziata with frescos and big altar piece (XVI century). Church of S. Angelo with crypt (1200) Church of SS. Pietŕ with medieval cloister, frescos and wooden statues of XVI century. Diocesano Museum in the XV century church of S. Pietro, with important tombstones, frescos and the Bartolomeo Franconi's baldachin tomb (1401). Church of S. Francesco (1307) with a beautiful wooden ceiling painted in 1745. Church of S. Andrea with tablets painted by Andrea Sabatini (XVI century). Rural Civilization Museum.

The Abbey of San Guglielmo of Goleto is situated on top of a hill not far from Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. This monastery has attracted many pilgrims over the years, and today is an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Inside its thick, stone walls is St. Luke's Chapel, with its important frescos, and the Greek Crossed Church .Also to be found inside the walls are a few small houses from the middle ages built by pilgrims whose religious convictions drew them near to St. Guglielmo's abode for protection. The Tower of the Abess' Defense can be admired through an inward door. The silence and the peace that pervades the monastery creates a mystical and unreal atmosphere.
