Hotel Portoghesi stands in the heart of old Rome, near Piazza Navona, on the street of the same name
in an area comprising Campo Marzio, St. Eustachio and Ponte district.The owners, an old Roman family, turned the ancient building into an hotel about one hundred and fifty years ago, maintaining intact furnishings and architectural quality also by affecting the necessary technical innovations and equipping it with all the modern comforts.
The nearby National Portuguese Church, from which the hotel and the street get their names, is dedicated to St. Anthony and was begun in the 15th century and completed in 1695.
The Church contains numerous works by famous artists and because of its historical and monumental importance is visited by tourists from all over the world.
Opposite the hotel stands the "Torre dei Frangipane", also called Tower of the Monkey, on the top of which the owners of the building placed a lamp before a statue of the Holy Virgin as a vote of thanks for the saving of their baby taken up there by a monkey (17th century).
