L'Orto degli Angeli is situated in the picturesque walled village of Bevagna, in the heart of Umbria. This beautifully restored historic residence is comprised of two ancient dwellings: Palazzo Alberti and Palazzo Andreozzi, connected by a hanging garden.
The present owner, Francesco Antonini dei Conti Angeli Nieri Mongalli, responsible for its transformation in historic residence, was born in the palazzo in 1948, and his family has lived here since 1788.
L'Orto degli Angeli has a total of fourteen rooms and apartments all decorated with original period furniture and paintings. The magnificent 300sqm "Arcangelo Custode", with polished terra cotta floor tiles and walls painted in a delicate shade of lavender, features a cupola painted in 1846 with trophies of musical instruments.
Breakfast is served in the family dining room, where a portrait of Francesco Antonini's illustrious ancestor, Pope Leone XII, hangs next to photographs of lesser known members of the family. A antique sideboard heaves under the weight of an abundant buffet of local salami, pecorino cheese, homemade jam tarts, cornetti, and custard filled brioche.
L'Orto degli Angeli's "Redibis" restaurant, located in what was once the ambulatory of the Roman theatre, built in the 1st century AD, serves dishes inspired by the changing of the seasons and the excellent products which the fertile lands of Umbria produce.
