Step aboard the good ship Salato - or "Salty" - and sail the waters from Calabria to Sicily for one of the most interesting, enjoyable and fun experiences you can have during your vacation to Calabria.

The Salato, which can accommodate up to 10 people, is captained by Mario Le Torre, an experienced mariner of considerable charm. The boat harbors in the beautiful ancient city of Tropea but serves an international clientele of very satisfied customers.
Departing from Tropea, Captain Le Torre will take your party on excursions around the Aeolian Islands, an archipelago of seven volcanically formed islands within 30 nautical miles of Tropea. UNESCO declared the Aeolians a world heritage site in the year 2000.
Each of the Aeolians, also known as the Seven Sisters, is interesting and beautiful in its own way. Alicudi and Filicudi offer the simple life, Salina is known for its wild vegetation, Vulcano Island has natural springs, and Stromboli is still an active volcano. Panarea Island is known for its sociable night life and Lipari Island for its more subtle cultural attractions. Smaller islands merely serve as lighthouse posts. The human history of the Islands shows the presence of civilizations such as Greek, Etruscan, Roman, and is mixed with myths and legends that date back 1000s of years.

Stromboli Island
Stromboli is maybe the most fascinating of the islands, with the active volcano 926 meters high. Ashes and lava coming out of the volcano create an incredible show while descending towards the ocean – That is called by the locals the "Sciara del Fuoco – The fire charade". The ocean water here is really deep, about three thousand meters and it is known as the Tyrrhenian trench. There are two ports on the island: Ficogrande and Scari where is possible to swim. |

Filicudi Island
This is the island for sea lovers. Called "Phoenicusa"because rich of ferns it is the oldest of the islands and still very wild with only 250 people living here. Capo Graziano is archeologically interesting, with a site that dates back to the Bronze Age. There are also relicts of two roman ships in the sea below the site.
Alicudi
For its position and lack of structures, Alicudi is the most isolated of the Eolie islands and often the conditions of the sea are very bad in its proximity. |
|
|
Fourth Day - Salina
- Possible excursion to Leni and Pollara which is inside a volcanic crater.
- Swimming in Lingua, where you will be able to taste the best granite of the Eolie.
|
Salina Island
Salina is the second island for size and population and the most green. There are two volcanos on the island, Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri. There are four ports on the island, Santa Marina is the main one. Very fascinating is the little fishing village of Rinella. In Pollara is possible to visit the set of the movie Il Postino – The Postman.
The islands has three main cities divided in 5 fractions that become very busy with tourists in summer. Interesting is the Emigration Museum of Malfa, created in 1999 representing the historic memory of the emigration phenomenon of the Eolie habitants between the nineteenth and twentieth century. |
|

Lipari (Capital of Eolie)
Lipari is the biggest island of the Archipelago and it is visible from the sea because of two large mountains Monte Chirica and Monte S. Angelo. The Monte Pelato is known worldwide because covered by pumice stone that is worked and exported all over. Important is the Museo Eoliano where is possible to see the history of the civilizations that occupied the Eolie.
There is no real port, but different places where to moor like Marina Corta, Sottomonastero, Pignataro and Canneto.
During the tour of the island it will be possible to see a part of the coast with a stratified composition of sulfur nature until the cliffs of Pietra Menalda and Pietra Lunga that guard the channel separating Lipari from Vulcano. |
|
|
Sixth Day - Vulcano
- Tour of the island, mud bath and water springs.
- Possible excursion to the "fossa della fucina – the forge trench".
|
Vulcano Island
Only a channel of 800 meter separates Lipari and Vulcano. The island is divided in three parts: Vulcano Piano at 400 meters of altitude, Vulcano Porto where the boats moor and Vulcanello. With its fine sand, rocks, spring waters the island presents a unique landascape. It was called by the Greek the Island of Fire.
To see during the tour of the island is the Horse Grotto where the sun rays create an incredible variety of colors and lights. Gelso has a wonderful beach of the finest sand. Beautiful as well are the bays of Porto Levante. |
|
|
Seventh Day - Panarea
- Possible excursion to Cala Milazzese to see its prehistoric village
- Tour of the islands with a stop at the cliff and then return to Tropea
|
Panarea
Panarea is the smallest of the islands but very well known for its night life and activities. The highest mountain of the island is Pizzo del Corvo on top of which sits a giant cross. The port of the island is called Scalo Ditella. Definitely to see is Cala Junco beautiful bay surrounded by two rock cliffs.
