Public baths formed an important part of
the culture of the Roman Empire in Rome,
the capital of the empire, 952
facilities were in operation by the
middle of the fourth century BC. Built
about AD 217 in Rome for the pleasure of
the leisure classes, the Baths of
Caracalla, which contained space for
1600 bathers, were a later and grander
example of these facilities. The huge,
vaulted interior contained baths,
swimming pools, lecture halls, lounges,
and exercise facilities. Once lined in
marble, the ruins of the Baths of
Caracalla now provide a majestic
open-air setting for opera performances
during the summer season.
