The town of Santa Domenica Talao lies just outside of Scalea and is on route to towns like Papasidero and Murmano in the National Park of Pollino

Though Santa Domenica Talao is small it is worth stopping here, not only for photo opportunities (second to none of the Tyrrhenian coast from the main piazza), but because the town is famous for its Medieval window and door arches that are simply so unusual and intricate, that you simply have to see them in person to appreciate them.

La Chiesa di San Giuseppe (Church of St. Joseph) may also be of interest to travellers, for not only is the church a work of art in and of itself, it contains the remains of famous families from the Kingdom of Naples,  and numerous ancient religious  artefacts, mainly from the Medieval period.  These can be found in the basement of the church. The church is open to the public most days of the week.  If it isn't, just ask at the local fruit store next door.

Outside the church, though stores are few, local merchants sell hand woven baskets, olive-oil and local wine. Most of them don't speak any English, but many are extremely friendly and will be very interested in talking with you - even if they don't speak any English.  Simply, try your hand at Italian - acknowledge them and smile and you'll more than likely receive one right back.

It won't take long to see all there is to see in Santa Domenica Talao, for everything is contained in such a compact space.  However, don't expect to frequent the town between the hours of 1PM and 5PM.  Everything here, as with many of the other towns on the Cedri Riviera, shuts down.  However, if you are looking for great photo opportunities - this is a great time frame in which to visit, because there is absolutely no one obstructing the fantastic views.

During the month of July, the town hosts its annual tribute to Saint Giuseppe on the first Sunday after the 20th of the month.  The celebration, when traditional costumes are worn by all villagers as they parade from the town to the cemetery, is phenomenal!

If you are looking to stay in the town of Santa Domenica Talao itself, you can look to stay in an "Agriturismo" residence.  Make sure to book in advance, because people from all over Italy come to stay here.
